Federal Prison Time Sentence Reduction Calculator

A simplified planning tool for estimating how Good Conduct Time, First Step Act credits, RDAP, and community placement may affect a federal sentence.

Federal sentence calculations can be difficult to understand, especially when several sentence-reduction programs and placement options may apply at the same time. This prototype was created to provide a clearer, more practical estimate without overwhelming users with every possible BOP variable.

The calculator is designed for people who are still on pretrial release or preparing to self-surrender, as well as individuals who are already serving a federal sentence. Our goal is to find the right middle ground: simple enough for families to use, but detailed enough to include the main factors that usually matter.

Good Conduct Time
FSA Credits
RDAP
Community Placement
Important: This calculator is for educational planning purposes only. It is not an official Bureau of Prisons sentence computation. Actual results may vary based on BOP records, eligibility decisions, PATTERN score, RDAP approval, disciplinary history, detainers, program availability, halfway house/home confinement decisions, and current BOP policy.

Federal Prison Time Sentence Reduction Calculator

Estimate projected federal prison time after Good Conduct Time, First Step Act Time Credits, RDAP, and best-case halfway house/home confinement.

1

Step 1: Sentence Information

Start with the sentence imposed, prison start date, and jail credit.

If they have not surrendered yet, choose "No." The calculator will treat the two-assessment question as Not Yet.
If they have not surrendered yet, use the expected surrender/report date. If already in custody, use the date the federal sentence began.
Example: 5 years = enter 5 years and 0 months. 42 months = enter 0 years and 42 months.
Use 0 if the person self-surrendered and had no prior federal custody credit.
Optional. Only use this if good time was lost due to discipline.
2

Step 2: FSA + PATTERN

Estimate First Step Act credits and whether they may be applied.

If they have not reported to federal prison yet, select "Not Yet." The calculator will estimate future eligibility based on the PATTERN score selected above.
Medium/High inmates may earn credits, but application usually depends on improving risk level or approval through an exception process.
3

Step 3: RDAP

Estimate possible RDAP sentence reduction if eligible and approved.

RDAP is estimated automatically: 24-30 months = 6 months, 31-36 months = 9 months, 37+ months = 12 months. The calculator will not show an RDAP sentence reduction unless the person is projected to have enough secure-prison time to complete the residential phase.
4

Step 4: Community Placement

Automatically estimate best-case RRC / halfway house and home confinement.

This calculator automatically estimates best-case community placement. It does not allow manual community-placement months because that can create impossible projections, especially when RDAP is selected. If RDAP is applied, the calculator protects a minimum planning period of 10 months in secure custody before community placement.
